Jason: Hey everyone, and welcome to the Jason the PT podcast. I'm your host, Jason, and today we're going to talk about something that's often mystifying and frustrating: injuries. Specifically, we're going to explore why injuries occur seemingly out of nowhere, and what you can do to prevent them.

Jason: So, let's get right into it. One of the most common questions I get asked as a physical therapist is, "Why did this injury happen? I didn't do anything to cause it." And in many cases, that may actually be true. Injuries can occur for a variety of reasons, and sometimes they do seem to come out of nowhere.
Jason: One of the main reasons for this is that our bodies are incredibly complex, and injuries can occur due to a wide range of factors. For example, you might have a muscle imbalance that you weren't aware of, or you might have some scar tissue from a previous injury that's causing problems. You might also be overusing a certain muscle or joint without even realizing it, which can lead to injury over time.
Jason: Another common cause of mysterious injuries is something called "microtrauma". Microtrauma refers to small, repetitive injuries that occur over time due to certain movements or activities. For example, if you're a runner, you might develop a stress fracture in your foot due to the repetitive impact of running. Or, if you're a musician, you might develop tendinitis in your wrist from playing the same instrument for hours on end.
Jason: So, what can you do to prevent these kinds of injuries? Well, the first step is to be aware of your body and any potential imbalances or weaknesses. This might involve getting a physical assessment from a physical therapist or other healthcare professional, who can help identify any areas that might be prone to injury.
Jason: It's also important to listen to your body and take rest days when you need them. If you're feeling particularly fatigued or sore, it's probably a sign that you need to take a break from your usual routine.
Jason: Finally, it's important to build up your strength and flexibility over time. This will help prevent injuries and also improve your overall performance in whatever activities you enjoy.
